Are you living life on your terms? Or on somebody else’s?
In the book The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware reveals the following regrets she was told by her dying patients:
- I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
- I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.
- I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.
- I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
- I wish that I had let myself be happier.
Let those sink in a little… can you imagine the pain of coming to the end of your life and feeling like you had yet to live any time as the person you were meant to be… ? What a waste of your talent and potential. Multiplied by the millions of people who feel this way… what a loss to the universe.
Can you imagine if Einstein had resigned himself to a fate of working as a clerk?
Or if Thomas Edison had accepted his teacher’s assessment that he was “too stupid to learn anything”?
What if J.K. Rowling had decided that writing children’s books was too risky and simply studied to become a teacher? (She did both, and I’ll bet she was a fun teacher to have!)
And yet, a study from 2010 indicates that almost half of adults haven’t figured out a sense of purpose for their lives…
How are you supposed to live your life on your own terms if you don’t even know what that means?
Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. – William Jennings Bryan
Trust me, I understand how hard that can seem sometimes. My family has been through some truly hellish, inexplicable situations over the past few years. If I wasn’t so sure that our Heavenly Father has a plan for each of us, there would have been so many times that it would have been easier to give up.
I don’t know how my story will end… but nowhere in the text will it ever read… “She gave up.”
So, join me on this journey. We have big goals as a family… five of our children wish to serve as missionaries… we have a possible move to another country… and with severe health challenges for several family members, there is a lot we need to do in order to accomplish these goals.
Or…if you’d really rather just stick to the J-O-B (you know, Just Over Broke)… at least entertain yourself with this great cover version of Dolly Parton’s Nine to Five by Home Free….
